this one is unfolding nicely. I am loving the gouache. New medium for me. I appreciate the organic texture and the way the color flows on the paper. More of theses to come. I may do prints of this one. We'll see where we are when it is finished. I am trying to get it done by Christmas. I don't know how realistic that is. :)

Any way, my goal today was to put something up on You tube, and I learned some things about stop motion animation too!. This is long and a little boring, but I consider it a successful experiment.

It is for a fund raiser to raise $ for a skatepark in Johnson, VT. Painting skateboards is fun... the newstudio is all good vibrations. I will be knocking out some solid work here, Yeee Haaa!

A work in progress... This one has evolved quite a bit since this shot was taken, but this stage in the process had a nice pop to it. I love documenting paintings through their evolutionary process. Often it is hard to see a piece until long after it is finished , and I hate to say it, but sometimes the photos of points in the process are stronger than the finished product. I started this painting in March of 2006 and still have not finished it.

HOW Do I silkscreen my own T-shirts you ask???

Wanna learn to silkscreen? Here are the basic steps. If your feeling inspired treat yourself to a Speedball Silk screening Kit ($40ish dollars). The booklet that comes with the kit breaks it down pretty well. It is also findable on line but you might have to search around for it. Silks screening is awesome and great fun and best of all, it allows you to wear your art!

Silk Screening Step One: Draw it up

Silk Screening Step Two: Lock it in

Make sure that your finished drawing is opaque. No light should go through it. Notice that the drawing is on a translucent paper. You will want light to be able to go through the paper, but not through the image. Tracing Paper or clear acetate film are both good for making images on. When it is finished hold it up to a window or a light to see if there are any thin spots in the ink. Make that sucker light safe. You may have to experiment with different pens until you find the right one for the job.

Silk Screening Step Three: Emulsify

The silk screen is a wooden frame with silk stretched over it. The screen will be coated with photo emulsion and put in a dark place until it dries. Drying usually takes about six hours. This is a good time to refine the image that you will be printing.

Silk Screening Step Four: Burn It

When the Photo Emulsion dries on the screen it becomes light sensitive. When you blast light through the screen (200 or 250 watt bulb time exposure will vary) it will burn the emulsion into the silk. Where your opaque image blocks the light the emulsion does not bake in. After your screen is finished being exposed you will run it under cold water and where the light was blocked out the emulsion will wash from the silk.

Silk Screening Step Five: Ink It

With ink the possibilities are wide open. Pull the ink through the screen with a squeegee. Use Textile ink or Acrylic paint when screening Fabric. Be sure to wash the screen thoroughly after you run the ink through so the screen does not clog.

I was making hearts a while back and my mom suggested that I make some brains for an auction she was having to raise funds for brain tumor research. I made the initial image on a silkscreen and went from there. I suspect I will make more brains in the future. They're fun to make... perhaps they will even have some hearts to team up with.
